Last weekend we went to Cupcakes for You for a spot of afternoon tea. I bought a voucher from itison in January and finally got around to calling and booking in a few weeks ago. I am trying to watch what I eat, but I am pretty sure everything I ate was calorie free!
Cupcakes for You on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow is a cute wee tea room that would be easy to walk past if you didn't know the area. That would be a great shame as they do one of the best afternoon teas I have had.
The tea room consists of three tables and vintage furniture. It felt a bit like you were sitting in someone's house. When we arrived there was a table for two reserved by the window, set with table cloth and vintage crockery. We were given a list of all the different teas on offer, you can have unlimited tea and can choose to try as many as you like. I was very tempted by some of the flavoured tea but settled for (slightly boring in comparison) Earl Grey, my boy opted for chai and cardamom.
A cake stand with the most amazing delights was brought to our table. The selection of savouries was lovely - sandwiches, quiche and sausage roll. As delicious as they were I was really desperate to get onto the cakes! This is my favourite thing about afternoon tea, the fact that it is ok to fill up on sweet things for a meal. I don't have a particularly sweet tooth, but when it comes to cake I do, honestly I would live on cake if it wouldn't make me fat.
The cakes were so moist and the buttercream to die for, I started with lemon cake and Richard had the coffee cake. There was one slice of each and since we are not keen on the other it worked out quite well and I got the lemon cake all to myself. After tasting the strawberry cupcake I really didn't want to share! Sharing the food is a nice touch because it means there is more to sample.
Once we had finished what was on the cake stand our scones were heated up in the oven. I loaded mine with jam and cream, but after just half the scone and a few bites out the other half I was completely defeated!
Cupcakes for You is definitely worth taking a trip to, maybe skip breakfast before though, you need to have a good appetite to try and tackle all the cake.
