About a month ago House of Wonderland put a post up on Facebook looking for bloggers, I had seen House of Wonderland at Judy's Vintage Fair and loved how quirky and different the jewellery was. Since my blog had just started and House of Wonderland is a brand that I like I jumped at the chance! Tess got in touch with me and suggested a Q&A, it was a great way to find out a bit more about the company and what the inspiration is for her jewellery.
K. Who are/is House of Wonderland?
T. My name is Tess and I am the co-founder and owner of House Of Wonderland. I live in Edinburgh with my husband and two young children. I set up House Of Wonderland in 2012. HOW is an independent rockabilly, kawaii jewellery & accessories company. We create handcrafted, original, unique items with the help of a little rainbow unicorn magic.
K. Where do you get your inspiration for your jewellery?
T. I am constantly being inspired by things around me to create new jewellery. My original inspirations when setting up House Of Wonderland was to create wearable tattoo inspired jewellery (without having to go through the pain of getting a tattoo!) As well as Japanese kawaii and manga. I am also inspired by my children, Disney movies, Etsy, Glitter and Studio Ghibli movies.
K. Did you study jewellery making at university/college or are you self taught?
T. I have been creating for 20 years now and as a young child often designed and customized my clothing and barbies clothing! I went on to study a BTEC diploma in Art and Design and a HNC in theatre costume design. I then worked freelance as a fashion designer selling my designs worldwide. I am a self taught seamstress and jewellery designer. Although I did have many failed attempts before I managed to suss out different techniques!
K. What techniques and materials do you use to produce your jewellery?
T. Alot of my designs begin as sketches in my trusty notebooks. After I have sketched out my designs I will usually digitally design & colour them. To make my jewellery I work with acrylic sheeting, clay and a little help from our unicorns.
K. Do you have any particular pieces that stand out as your favourite?
T. I do love so many the House Of Wonderland goodies and wear them on a daily basis! I love making the kawaii collars and cuff bracelets. I love working with glitter even though I always end up with more over myself! I also love the new pieces with our latest collaboration Dollydripp.
K. Any tips for people wanting to start up their own business?
T. Defiantly! Be original! Make sure that you offer a good quality product or service. Prioritize customer service, a happy customers always return. And be prepared to work hard. With running your own business you get what you put in.
K. What is next for House of Wonderland?
T. We are currently working on lots of brand new designs as well as bringing back our best sellers. We have just launched our brand new website which can be found at www.how-store.com as well as this we are also preparing for fairs this year including working with Pinupzania for London Film Festival/Comicon!
I picked a few a my favourite pieces from their website
Alice in Wonderland Cupcake - Anything that incorporates Alice in Wonderland and cupcakes is a winner for me! I also love the Kawaii necklace, 'kawaii' means cute in Japanese and this necklace is definitely that.
Happy Unicorns necklace, who doesn't love unicorns?!
